all quiet on the job front - okay - still nothing. this is ridiculous. annoying. i've started thinking that since pops has been talking about buying a houseboat in new bern, i should look for jobs in that area. most of the math teaching jobs were more middle school, but there were also a few high school. i guess that's a projet for tomorrow. living on a houseboat would be interesting. of course classes start in like a week.

yes i know i've not been posting much lately. so if you're an aim user and don't want to check needlessly - or just to be the first to comment about something, check out the blog change bot. i've been trying it out the past couple of days - seems to work pretty well. all it requires is you sending an im to the screenname blogchangebot withe the message "subscribe url". to subscribe to roseblog, click here click here. it does seem people have been warning it and interfering with it lately.

i've accumulated quite a collection of mediocre links. maybe some are interesting. i dunno. i usually surprise myself when reviewing them. since i doubt anyone followed friday's links, i'll probably go back and make em look nice in a day or two.

la playa hata - well since it's not sunday, i figured i'd post a bit. this weekend was a memorable one. i had a feeling it would be such so i delayed the decision to attend. once i was sure it was really happening, i did commit (though as the last post attests, i did so quite belatedly) to attend. i did so mostly to make the weekend more fun for others. (apparently my attempts at levity are somewhat succesful.) it was not some purely noble act of course; i was still getting a free trip to the beach.
four of us went to professor hacker's lost treasure golf. abby asked the attendant it was a putt-putt or a mini golf. she said "mini golf. what's the difference?" while i thought the answer should have been obvious to abby - the response i found much more annoying. why do people answer questions and then ask for more information? this happened several times this weekend. another incident happened saturday. the television was on and i believe while flipping channels there was a clip of bob hope (he could have just come up in conversation, but i don't know why he would have). someone asked if he was still alive. the weird thing was that i knew he'd recently turned 100 and i knew i'd have heard if he was not, yet i still could not answer in the affirmative. it was rather odd and became much more so when i returned and found out that he did pass away this weekend. as i am not sure who all visits this site, i think i'll stop the recap here for now.

riding the seoul train - as i've still hadn't heard back about the contracts, i wrote the recruiter for an update.
the response:
Hi:
The revisions are still being deliberated and we should hear back by Monday.
As soon as a decision has been reached I will email you immediately.
Sincerely,
Elaine Ramos
Recruiting Director

unless the international dateline someone screws me up, i think i should have heard by now. i've checked hotmail like 30 times today. no info. allll i've learned is that i really don't care to have my spam revealed one by one. it's like taking a bandaid off slowly.

well as my attendance is desired on a bit of a sojurn to the beach, there won't be any update until sunday. (sorry - i haven't packed and i'm to leave in 15 mins.) i'm a little hesitant about this excursion. i kinda feel like we could all get down there and there will be nothing to do. i want to pack up a bunch of dvds, but i don't have any idea if i'll be able to use them. where's mo's books when you need them. i might even get around to reading "everything is illuminating" despite the nauseating cover. here are some links that i intended to post about.

i promised mo a good headline so i'll do one. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L23109558.htm - freakin germans 9/11

well i've yet to hear from the recruiter since i sent the second contract back. this is rather annoying. as i seem to have distributed a few of these links already, i might as well post them. (btw, if you have something you think others would like...go ahead and send em.)

i've looked over my backlist and found many of them to be rather unfunny. i've put the more lighthearted ones at the beginning so those who don't make it through all of them won't find them as much of a downer. i guess i'll publish it as i go since i take so long.

roscoe's had pity on me, so i've removed the contracts from this page. now you just have to follow your mouse.

here's the contract from lci kids club language school in gwangju. here's my revised version.
since the recruiter responded so positively "We spoke with the school director and he will review the changes you requested. The odds of having all of the changes agreed and made are probably slim so..." , I figured a few links would be good.

they might appease mo at least.

I spent some time trying to combine the crappy contract i was sent (a couple of posts below), with efl law's sample contract.
this is what i came up with:
i've read a few rather poor reviews of different bcm franchises. i'm thinking this is probably not the best place for me. maybe i should just teach in japan.
i've been reading lots of websites about korea and teaching english there. i figured i'd collect them for later use by others as well as me.
okay. updates on korea. first job fell through. talked with another school. received contract offer from yet another school. they want an answer today. (they also want me to send my original diploma to korea today.) the contract is quite a bit different than how the school's website describes things.

today i really wish i had real webspace and different pages to post this stuff on. below is the contract I received by email today from kondae bcm language center. I'll make my notes elsewhere. This blog is going to be korea dominated for a while i'm guessing (despite my backlog of links.) the contract reminds me quite a bit of the sample bad contract on efl law. this is why i'm trying to merge it with their sample good contract. [edit] here's the link to the contract from kondae bcm.

well since abruptly leaving the country for a year with relatively little information only prompts one comment, i guess it's time for backlinks. i weeded out most of the stale links, but i have a few decent articles left. i figure few read all the links anyway, might as well save a few for a more boring day.

well that news backlog hasn't gone anywhere, but i have something else on my mind. (i also added a blogroll and a "blogroll me" link.) i've been thinking about teaching esl abroad for a while. i applied to a recruiter a week or two ago. today i talked to the recruiter (several times) as well as the director of a school (bupyong kids club). well it's quite likely i'll be receiving the contract by email tomorrow. they want a determination...tomorrow. i'd be leaving in about 2 weeks. i'm trying to decide if i'm doing this since i can't stand living here anymore or if i really want to do this. while they could be lying, the school situation didn't sound horrible. i'm not the most comfortable around young kids, but i'm okay with that. i can't help but think i should have done this last february. if i had, i should have made it back in time for ashley's wedding. as it is, i have a feeling that would be somewhat tough. (i've gotten conflicting information about this.) either way, being back for good would have been much easier.

one friend mentioned that it's just darn far. no argument, though i did point out that i wasn't doing anything while "close." (although i do intend to attend quiz night - might as well use my current events knowledge while i can.)

well that's what's been on my mind. if i decide to depart, you should be able to find out here tomorrow or wednesday.

eh, i've once again allowed a backup of news. as to my news - i'm trying out a new chair. it's a la-z-boy chair. i am quite partial to my old chair, so we'll see if i keep it. while it's a bit larger than i'd like for the room, it does roll much better than the old one.

no real update. on to the shew.

Wednesday, July 09, 2003

it seems rather clear that if i post more than 5 links or so, i'm quite unlikely to have any comments. interresting. i've got at least 5 more links (plus a misty update). i think i'll hold off to keep a little longer.

well i've moved in more stuff into the closet. it's now rather full. i've also rearranged my room. i don't think it'll be as comfortable as it was. more tinkering will follow. i've determined that i have way too many tshirts. i remember helping one guy moved about 10 years ago who was about my age and laughing at the number of tshirts he had (two closets full). while i'm not that bad (he did have a remarkable collection of jimmy buffet concert shirts), i've counted 23 tshirts on hangars and likley that many folded. (undershirts were not included in the count). so if anyone is looking to help advertise wachovia or pan-african, let me know.

(btw, i've determined that this blog can be rather dull and impersonal. while you may find this appropriate, i think i might make personal comments like this more frequently. they will likely be above the news links so you can easily ignore them if you want.)

i've collected a rather extensive list since the last post. we'll see how many are included before i'm bored. eh, that's enough for now.

Monday, July 07, 2003

well it's been a while since my last post. friday - food, folks, fun, fireworks and a drive to virginia beach. saturday - food, folks, fun, beach, and a drive back. that's about it...except for a closet update! last night around 7 i had what felt like a migraine and fell asleep. i'm not sure when it happened, but i awoke and soon realized that the door in the closet was hung. it's possible this happened when i went to see whale rider. anyway, so i've also put up 8 shelves of varying length. once i determine how well the door keeps out the attic heat, i may move in my clothes from matt's room. hmm...now that i think about it, i will likely just hang up my tshirts and see how well everything fits. once the carpet is in, i'll move the rest. so news i've come across and remembered to post it.

there was news today, but i cheated and actually looked for some of the news less trodden.
